How to make Tree Hut Scrubs (with Recipe)
Tree Hut Scrubs have been gaining popularity. They’re soft, gooey, and self-emulsifying and they don’t harden as many DIY scrubs do.
Let’s try to recreate the whole soft scrub experience, shall we? It's fun, easy, and customizable!
To start, let’s right away stress that the essence of these types of scrub is Silica. It’s a super fine, light powder and when you add it to your oils it creates oil gels. To this oil gel, we have to add an antioxidant, an exfoliant, an emulsifier, and a fragrance or essential oil. We can play around with different toils, butters, humectants, fatty alcohols, extracts, exfoliants, actives, and colorants to create different variations of the product but it’s easier o start with a basic set of ingredients and then expand the ingredient list of needed. Sometimes, less is more.
Make sure to get cosmetic-grade Silica powder.
Let’s take a look at my “keep it simple stupid” formulation for the Tree Hut Watermelon Scrub-inspired sugar scrub.

A 40.00% Sunflower Oil
A 6.00% Polysorbate 80
A 3.00% Silica
A 2.00% Watermelon Margarita Fragrance
A 1.50% Vitamin E
B 12.00% Glycerin
C 35.00% Sugar
C 0.50% Poppy Seeds / Black Jojoba Beads
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Mix your oils and Silica, try to make a uniform oil gel, but don’t worry if see a few clumps. They will dissolve as silica hydrates.
2. Add Glycerien to the oil gel and mix well.
3. Add your exfoliants and a colorant if necessary. I divided my batch into 2 parts and colored them with red and green mica to create a “watermelon” kind of effect.
4. Mix everything one more time and set aside for about 12-24 hours before packaging.
Feel free to add different oils, butters (melted), glycerites, and plant extracts to create beautiful, unique product.
