Scheherazade Rose &Patchouli Body Oil

As a child, I loved reading fairy tales from all over the world. They really opened my mind about different countries, cultures, and traditions and the experience was just magical. One of my favorite fairy tales collection was One Thousand and One Nights told by Shecherezade to King Shahryar to delay her execution.

So when I started formulating body oil my mind went back to the beautiful times of my childhood and I decided to create luxurious body oil inspired by Shecherezade. This recipe features the queen of the oils Argan oil, lightweight and rich Rosehip Seed oil, healing and soothing Calendula extract, and the intoxicating deep, sophisticated fragrance oil blend of Rose, Patchouli, and Yuzu. The end product is moisturizing, nourishing, not greasy but also not super lightweight with a gentle floral aroma dancing around citrusy notes that are going to leave your body feeling smoothed, soothed, and happy.

Substitutions &General Information

You can play around with the recipe, add more oils or reduce some of the ones I chose. For a heavier, greasier body oil you can reduce the amount of Fractionated coconut oil and add heavier-feeling oils like macadamia, hempseed, cherry seed, avocado, olive. If you want a lighter, dry finish skin feel substitute some of the macadamia oil for more Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, or Isopropyl Myristate. If you don't want to use dimethicone you can substitute it for Luxglide 350 or Coco Caprylate. If you can't source any of these ingredients you could try adding more fractionated coconut oil. Read more about common myths about silicones here.

Macadamia Oil is fantastic for dry, sensitive skin

In this body oil, I went for a combination of CO2 extracts of calendula and sage. You can use any OIL-SOLUBLE extracts or actives to add more skin-loving properties to your product. If you don't have anything on hand you can add some exotic, luxurious oil like Marula, Tamanu, Evening primrose, Meadowfoam, Cranberry, Broccoli, or whatever oil your skin loves.

Since it's an oil-based anhydrous product that is not going to come into contact with water it doesn't need a preservative. If you want to prolong the shelf life of your body oil you have to add Vitamin E to your formula. I am using Tocopherols and Ascorbyl Palmitate Blend but you can also use Mixed Tocopherols.

If you prefer using essential oils you could use a blend of rose, patchouli, and yuzu essential oil. However, Rose essential oil very expensive so a cheaper solution would be Rosewood or Geranium essential oil. If you can't source Yuzu essential oil (it's also very expensive) then you could go for lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, lime, or bergamot essential oils for that bright citrusy note. I used Patchouli and Rose Fragrance oil from Mystic Moments and Yuzu from Natures Garden.

A sweet and smokey rose fragrance with the much adored added depths of patchouli base notes combine to create a truly wonderful and rich oil.

Mystic Moments

Also referred to as Japanese Grapefruit, Yuzu is not your ordinary grapefruit scent.  Yuzu begins with top notes of mandarin, tangerine, lemon satsuma, and ruby red grapefruit, middle notes of bergamot, and base notes of oakmoss.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • If you use very concentrated Calendula CO2 extract then it's going to be very thick and difficult to incorporate into your product. I measure my fractionated coconut oil, add the extract and very gently warm them up to about 30-40C.

  1. Weigh your oils into a glass beaker big enough to hold your batch. Make sure you have accurate scales that measure down to at least 0.1.

2) Add your extracts, actives, fragrance or essential oils and your Vitamin E.

3) Pour the product into a bottle and enjoy your luxurious and rich homemade body oil!

Now you know not only how easy it is to make a body oil but also how to customize it to your preference and skin type. Don't be afraid to experiment, be brave and bold because that's how we learn best.
